Friday Morning - Post by

Bonjour! Good morning from
Haiti! It has been a wonderful trip thus far.
I wanted to spend a little
bit reflecting on my time in Haiti. This is my first time on a missions trip
overseas. Many people (including my wife) have gone to Haiti and specifically
to HAFF. They tell you stories about what it will be like but until you get
here, you can truly take in all its full beauty. Three quick experiences that I
wanted to share.
1) Playing baseball with a
few Haitian youth that never have played is a very hard sport to teach. Teaching
them foul ball, teaching them to stay on the base and even run after hitting
the ball. It would be a lot easier just to teach them tag J. Overall though, it was a wonderful experience to
watch them learn from us and trying to communicate with them.
2) On my way from Port au
Prince, many people would just stare at us, mostly due to a big van travelling
through, and that we were all “blan” (Dutch white people J). While at HAFF, we have meet some teenage boys
(Handal and Anderson) that shared their testimony and a little bit about their
lives. Even though they might be miles away from West Michigan, they serve the
same true and living God. Their passion for serving Christ and the connection
to their community is something that I never have seen before.
3) Our “home visit” outing
was a time when we were able to go visit a few neighbors of HAFF that were
suffering: they may have lost of husband/father, or a lady that just had a stroke,
etc. It was refreshing to see their faith and optimism in their outlook on
life. The glass was always half full for
them.
Today we will be doing some
more home visits in another part of Bohoc, down across the river (where they
wash cows, cars, children, etc.). We will also be visiting the HAFF clinic where Derold’s
sister works. After that, we will be lacing up our shoes and playing a friendly
match of soccer with some area kids.
One quick thing about the
food, IT IS AMAZING!!! I have had goat, pumpkin stew, blacker-than-black coffee
and delicious peanut butter!
We appreciate everyone’s
prayers for the group. The team has had high spirits and we are very optimistic
for the rest of the week!
